AEDC ~ Projects (Northern Cape, South Africa)

FLAGSHIP PROJECT : Magwagwe and Ntswelengwe Villages

This project is situated in 2 villages, Magwagwe and Ntswelengwe with some 1,200 community members.  They are experiencing now, for the first time, first world technology and comfort.

The project includes the provision of AEDC zinc-air fuel cells and secondary power packs to provide 220Volt A/C to allow the villagers to operate colour TV’s and other appliances with energy needs of up to 90 Watts.  An inverter is provided in order to provide the  220Volt A/C.

The energy is available 24/7 and

HAS NO CARBON FOOT PRINT

The project is supported by 2 separate service shops. One is an office and learning centre with computer, photo copier and scanner in order to provide internet access.

Additional learning opportunities are provided to school learners by their being able to to operate a computer.

The second service shop has a de-ionized water plant and electrolyte mixing station, a store room and a facility to manufacture new anodes manually.

A borehole with submersible water pump, operated by fuel cells, provides the water needs.

An environmental friendly toilet system, complying to the WHO rules for rural sanitation is provided at the service shop.

The waste water is collected and used in a community vegetable garden. Some of the zinc and zinc oxide created in the energy process of the fuel cells is used as high value fertilizer for food security. The vegetable garden is under construction and will be similar than the one in Guyuni, Limpopo.

The project provides new job opportunities for entrepreneurs.  TWO sustainable jobs have been created for the fuel cell technicians that operate the service shops and learning centre.  TWO further jobs are created for community members to manufacture anodes.  Other opportunities now exist to start home industry businesses like haircutting studios, sewing with electric sewing machines, photo copying and small business centre, internet cafe', etc.
